Students visit the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computing, get acquainted with the labs.
The second intervention of the JOBSTEM project was carried out between the 3rd and the 26th of February.
The project research team from the Institute of Social Sciences Ivo Pilar collaborated with the schools in the experimental treatment to organize a trip for their students (4th, 5th and 6th forms) to the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computing at the University of Zagreb.
The team from the university - Predrag Pale, Tomislav Jagušt and Juraj Petrović - organized a myriad of exciting activities with the help of their colleagues to vividly depict for the young students what STEM-field careers are all about. During their day-long visit, the lucky youngsters were given the opportunity to explore the University research labs, such as:
The Laboratory for Robotics and Intelligent Control Systems LARICS;
The Laboratory for Underwater Systems and Technologies LABUST;
The Laboratory for Renewable Energy Systems LARES.
The students were also shown some of the various departments: the Department of Electroacoustics, The Department of Electronic Systems and Information Processing, and the Department of Telecommunications.
They learned how to operate flying machines, robots, tanks and cars; found out about underwater technology, acoustics and renewable energy systems, as well as tried their own hands at computing. To top it all - they were instructed how to "control" a computer with their own "thoughts" via brainwaves!
Apart from presenting their own work to the young visitors, the scientists from the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computing also devised special workshops in which the children could take the lead:
LEGO Mindstorms, on assembling and programming a LEGO robot ,
